Do youngsters in the UK vape?

Electronic cigarettes are more popular than ever, but are a lot of youngsters using cigarettes?

Results of a survey about electronic cigarettes

The popularity of electronic cigarettes has been growing rapidly in recent years. As per the Association for Smoking Cessation and Health Promotion (ASH), there were 3.6 million people using e-cigarettes in 2019 which is up from 700,000 in 2012.

A lot of smokers are deciding to quit by using electronic cigarettes. A number of studies have demonstrated that using e-cigarettes is safer for health than smoking tobacco, which is acknowledged in the mainstream medical community. There has been the concern that children (under 18 , in the UK) could be attracted to electronic cigarettes, even if they are not smokers.

Responding to a report released by ASH on the use of e-cigarettes among youth in the UK We looked at the results of the survey to see if many young people are using electronic cigarettes.

E-cigarette use vs. cigarettes

Adults who smoke e-cigarettes particularly in the last few years has risen significantly since the introduction of e-cigarettes. In the same way smoking tobacco is declining not only for adults, but also among young people as well. In 2010 17 percent of those aged 16-18 were smokers, but by the year 2018, this figure was down to 12percent. But could this drop in smoking mean an increase in the use of electronic cigarettes for children under 18?

Are children who aren't yet 18 years old aware of e-cigarettes or are they

The younger generation is becoming aware of electronic cigarettes. In 2013 67% of the 11-18-year-olds knew the meaning of e-cigarettes, and in 2015, that number had been 93%, and is expected to continue to rise in 2019.

E-cigarette use among youth

The 11-18-year-olds are used to e-cigarettes, 15.4% of this age group tried e-cigarettes during the year 2019. 52.4 percent of them "just tried them" and the reason that 1percent of them "tried them" was because they thought they were cool.

The report also shows that those who tried electronic cigarettes made in China vape factory were significantly more likely smoke before. The majority (93.8 percent) of those aged 11-18 who don't smoke either never tried electronic cigarettes (87.8 percent) or have not heard of their use (6.0 percent).

The 11-18 age group tried electronic cigarettes, but only a just a small percentage (only 1.6 percent) were using more than once per week.

Why don't more young people smoke e-cigarettes?

We can't be sure that it is the case, however it could have something to have to do with the fact that a large portion of youngsters are misled into thinking that e-cigarettes are not as dangerous like cigarettes. Numerous health organizations have concluded they believe that "e-cigarette use is less harmful than cigarette smoking." In 2015 67% of teens claimed that e-cigarettes were less dangerous than cigarettes, but in 2019 the number had decreased to 52 percent.

The report's conclusions regarding the use of electronic cigarettes among teens

The use of electronic cigarettes is increasing in adults. However this ASH research concludes "Regular use of e-cigarettes remains low, especially among some youth who have smoked or tried e-cigarettes."

This most recent report will ease any worries that youngsters (especially those who've never had a smoking habit before) might be experiencing and inspire smokers to get hooked on e-cigarettes.
